Today’s plans are for another style of planter box mason jar centerpiece that I used for the lemonade party. The first planter box was the square version, this one is for a rustic tool box caddy style. Since the 4th of July is coming up, I thought I’d use it for patriotic decorations. An easy update with painted mason jars and white flowers.
How to Build a Wood Tool Box Caddy for Mason Jars

Materials
- 1″ x 6″ x 8′ board
- 3/4″ dowel
- 1 5/8″ deck screws or 1 1/2″ screws
- 1 1/4″ pocket screws*
- wood glue
- sand paper
Cut List
- 2 – 3/4″ x 4 1/4″ x 12 1/4″
- 1 – 3/4″ x 4 1/4″ x 19 1/4″
- 2 – 3/4″ x 5 1/4″ x 20 3/4″
- 3 – 3/4″ x 4 1/2″ x 4 1/4″
- 1 – 3/4″ round dowel x 22 3/4″ long
Note: I used barn wood to build my caddy, and the thickness is slightly thicker than 3/4″. If you are also using barn wood double check your thickness and make adjustments as necessary.
Cut the 2 pieces for the ends, 4 1/4″ x 12 1/4″. Use a round object like a stain can to trace a half circle on the top. Use a jig saw, scroll saw or band saw to cut out the curve and sand as needed. Mark 1 3/4″ down for the dowel hole. Drill a 3/4″ hole through the end pieces for the handle.
I wanted to limit the number of screw heads showing, so I drilled pocket holes* in the bottom piece. If you don’t care or don’t have a pocket hole jig, add screws through the side. Pre-drill the holes before adding screws to reduce wood splitting.
Drill pocket holes in the bottom piece, or screw from the side. Use wood glue and 1 1/4″ screws to attach the ends to the bottom.
Attach the sides to the caddy with wood glue and screws, make the bottoms flush.
Add the dividers, spaced about 4 1/4″ apart. Use wood glue and screws to secure the dividers into place. I tried to cut the barn wood so that it will show more weathered edges over cut edges. Thread the dowel through the 3/4″ holes and that’s it!
Creating a patriotic centerpiece is super easy. I painted 4 – quart mason jars red and blue. Filled the jars with water and placed them in the caddy.
Then added a few white flowers (these are from Costco) and there you go a cute rustic Red, White and Blue decoration. How will you use your tool box caddy?
