I have some old bead board frames that I want to update.  They are cute but I don’t always like undoing the acorn nuts to put the new picture in and then realizing I didn’t center it after I hang it back up.  🙂  I want to be able to switch out pictures really easy.

I would also like to transition some of the decor into more of a farmhouse style with reclaimed wood look. To make switching out the picture nice and easy, I’m going to use a similar idea to the sliding photo board. The top and bottom boards will have a little slot to allow the photo to slide in and out.

DIY Patriotic Wood Flag

It is creeping up to July and I wanted to add some patriotic decor to my front porch to celebrate the 4th of July. I love the look of the big wood flag and thought it would be a nice statement piece. Also my husband’s boss is retiring from the air force base and we thought it would fun to give him one too. I had two ideas on how to tackle the project, one way was to use slats for each of the stripes, the other a solid board with the stripes routed in.  These flags stay true to the traditional flag dimensions.

This build will be featuring the new Ryobi trim router. Going cordless is a little bit frivolous, but it sure is sooo nice and convenient. I only have a few plugs in my garage, I really like grabbing my cordless tools so I don’t have to drag the extension cord everywhere.

Ryobi One+ Trim Router (Bare-Tool)The trim router is made for trimming edges for laminate counter top installation. It’s also great for adding details to projects using router bits. Like I did on my Portable LEGO Totes.  It is easy to use also. To change the bit, push the gray ‘brake’ button down and unscrew the collet nut (where the router bit goes). Place the nut then collet sleeve on the shaft of the router bit.

Place that back in the hole and tighten the collet nut. (Righty tighty – lefty loosey)

To change the height of the router bit showing, flip the latch open and use the dial knob to raise and lower the bit. Then flip the latch back in place.

Snap a battery on and it’s ready to go. When you run out of battery, it has a soft shut down. If you forget to switch the power off and replace the battery, it won’t automatically start again. You have to switch the power off and back on for it to go. That’s a good safety feature!

The Ryobi trim router is a fun little tool and a great asset to add detail to projects. It was easy to use on both flag designs. Continue reading

DIY Decorative “Vintage” Wood Ladder

Last fall I helped my good friend with a few DIY wedding decor projects for her step-daughter’s wedding.  The wedding turned out so beautiful. It was held at a venue with a large open grass field and a unique old barn as the backdrop. The colors for the wedding were mint, gray, white and champagne and all of the decor had a rustic flare to tie in with the barn.  One of the DIY wedding decor projects was for a vintage wood ladder inspired by this one.  I made the ladder rails and steps a little bit wider than the inspiration ladder to make it easier to place decorations on the steps.

Buffalo Check Holiday Tablescape

Hi and welcome to the DIY’ers 2016 Holiday Tablescape Tour, thanks for stopping by!

Holiday Tablescape Tour 2016

A DIY’ers tour wouldn’t be complete without a few DIY home decor projects for a holiday table. I just built a 48″ round table for my kitchen and I couldn’t wait to deck it out for Christmas breakfast.

One of my favorite features of the table is the super chunky pedestal base.  The whole table was built with simple lumber from Home Depot.

Plus a holiday tablescape tour for lots of fun and festive table ideas. We are usually very casual around here, our nice plates are the Corelle plates with the blue flowers from the 80’s!  I decided it was high time to get some holiday tableware.

I found these cute red and black buffalo check plates at Hobby Lobby. Since they are a little lumberjack-ish I decided to make a little pine tree forest!  The green napkins are folded in a pine tree napkin shape.  The buffalo check plates needed a charger against the brown table, so I cut 13″ chargers from scrap 3/16″ plywood. I painted the chargers white and added a black pinstripe to match with the coordinating holiday tableware.

I couldn’t pass up the festive bowls,

and serving platter. On Christmas morning it will be filled with yummy cinnamon rolls.

My Christmas table centerpiece starts with this fun DIY rustic lantern, you can check out the tutorial here (this is the small lantern). To keep with the pine tree theme, I added a 1 foot tall miniature Christmas tree in the center, lit with battery LED lights. A few miniature trees and pine cones adorn the lantern.

I also tried the lantern filled with a wood stump and candles.  Help me decide, which look is cuter?  Tree or candles?
