In the 1989 Field of Dreams movie the motto was: “If you build it, he will come.” Well for a DIY’er the adage is just slightly different: “If you can build it, they will call!” 🙂 When the opportunities arise (and they will) to help out a friend, family members or even a client with a project, it sure is nice to have portable tool storage solutions when you’re on the go.
I am going to highlight a few of my favorite products to keep things mobile, but leave me a comment if you have a favorite product I should check out.
1. Husky 10″ Round – 19 Pocket Canvas Tote
The first product is a little canvas tote that I love to use constantly in the shop and on the go. I like to put all of my different screw types and sizes in the 6 larger center pockets. In the outer pockets, I put my most common bits and hand tools/screw drivers. The center handle is convenient. You can plop 3 or 4 of these in a 5 gallon bucket to take on the go. Definitely one of my favorite totes.
2. Husky 19″ Pro Hybrid Tote with Tool Organizer
For slightly larger tools there is this handy hybrid tote. This tote is nice because it has a open top design for easy accessibility, but with elastic straps all around to keep tools where you want them. It also has a secondary pocket with a hand tool organizer case that zips closed.
Features:
- Heavy-duty 1680D poly fabric with reinforced corners and edges and feet on the bottom
- Universal open center storage for larger tools
- Zip up tool organizer case for organized hand tools
- Measuring tape clip on outside of tote
- Dual truck handles provide quick carry or grab point
- Tote has 6 external pockets, 18 internal pockets/straps
3. Husky 22 in. Connect Rolling System Tool Box
As I get older, I’ve become a bigger fan of wheels! With leverage and wheels, you can haul a bunch of tools and supplies in this stack-able tool storage system with little effort. The system comes with 3 different sized organizers, but you can add more, and they just click onto one another.
Features
- 22″ deep organizer with 12 removable bins for small parts
- 22″ tool box with removable tray
- 22″ rolling cart with attached 7″ wheel and a telescoping cart handle
4. Mobile Job Box
I’ve used this 37″ job box on a number of jobs. It is great to store your tools and supplies, and it locks! They have also designed the top to be useful and a makeshift workbench. I personally think this storage box is most useful when you are taking a trailer with a ramp to the job site. If the job box was full, it may be difficult to lift into the back of a truck.
Features
- Storage capacity: 50 gallon
- Retractable handle
- Removable tray
- Water and dust seal
- Keyed lock with metal latches
- 8″ all terrain wheels
5. Truck Bed Tool Box
If you are on the go often, then consider a truck tool box. We absolutely love ours. Our truck has the Weatherguard X-wide and it is fantastic. I am always amazed at how much stuff we can fit in it. A 5 gallon bucket can easily stand up in the tool box. Not only is it great for hauling tools and products, but it’s also great for play. When we go camping or on vacation, we are able to pack the tool box full of luggage or camping supplies for worry free driving down the road. (I’m always concerned things will fly out otherwise.) The truck tool box also locks, so I feel safe when we stop places.
These are just a few solutions to keep my tools organized on the go. I find it important to have my tools organized to make sure I have everything needed for the job…and I remember to bring all my tools back home! 🙂

Hey Amy,
Great recommendation.
I recently purchased a Husky Rolling System Tool Box. Remarkably durable, great bang for the bucks, ample room for tools. The best thing, I can comfortably walk around with all my instruments by the wheels. Anyone looking for high-quality portable storage, this is reasonably the best choice.
Also, I got a few buddies looking for portable toolboxes, and I am going to share your viewpoint with them. I hope they will like to read this article.
